Urban Presentation
Transcript: - There is no evidence to show that brief Wilderness programmes have any benefits for adolescents' self concepts, behaviors or environmental attitudes (Orren, werner, 2007). - THIS SUGGESTS THAT WILDERNESS PROGRAMMES MAY NOT WORK FOR ALL ADOLESCENTS AS IT TAKES THEM OUT OF AN ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE CONFORTABLE IN. bY ENAGAGING YOUTHS WITHIN AN URBAN ENVIRNMENT THEY MAY BE MORE WILLING TO ENGAGE WITH ACTIVITIES. - HOWEVER, THIS IS ONLY ONE school OF THOUGHT, AND OUTDOOR ADVENTURE IN THE 'WILDERNESS' MAY BENEFIT MANY DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS. Urban Presentation - Youth work can result in huge benefits for participants. - the risks involved (mentioned in outdoor urban education) mean the activities carried out can be limited. - this video demonstrates the benefits of youth work, but also the restraints: - ''The derive acts as something of a model for the 'playfull creation' of all human relationships.'' (psychogeography and the derive, no date). - the derive is very much a concept of psychogeography, but also links to youth work as it can help build relationships between youths and leaders, without having to take them out of the urban environment. It also can then be used to allow young people to explore the city using methods they may not have thought to use before. for example, the derive app allows the Youths to expore their environment on their own. youth work and urban adventure Urban Outdoor Education Different concepts of urban and the potential they have to link together. - Field study can be very academic - By taking an ecological study and adapting it to an outdoor activity can make it more engaging. Urban exploration and psychogeography ''Two approaches to the study of urban ecology ... 1) The ecology 'in' and 'of' cities. 2) The ecology of urbanisation gradients'' (Niemela, 2011). Urban ecology can be seen as a scientific study, but can also be converted into a range of different processes How does youth work and urban adventure link to urban exploration and psychogeography? - Urban exploration can be seen as a form of experiential learning. when done in urban environments, it links to psychogeography and the derive. The website 28 days later (2015), a forum for urban exploration has a disclaimer on the home page: ''it is not a club or organisation and has no representatives, members or physical presence''. - Buildering is a form of urban adventure, and could be used to engage disaffected youths in climbing. - This also relates to urban outdoor education as it could potentially act as a tool to teach climbing in urban environments - within the realms of risk assessment. Buildering Urban Ecology How does urban ecology link to urban outdoor education? How does Urban outdoor education link to youth work and urban adventure - working with young people in the outdoors can make it restrictive; Risk assessments control what is viable. - the lyme bay disaster in 1993 resulted in tightened regulations when performing adventurous activities. - This does not exclude educational adventurous activities in urban environments. Part of urban ecology can be analysing the distribution of living organisms on a man made environment
