Transcript: Fire Protection System Ionization-area type. 2 types of fire that can affect an airplane Handheld fire extinguishers are provided throughout the airplane cabin for manual firefighting. Boeing airplanes currently use water or Halon 1211 fire extinguishers. This type of extinguisher contains approximately 2.5 pounds (1 kilogram) of Halon 1211, weighs about 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms), and can be used on any fire likely to occur in the airplane, including paper, fabric, electrical, or flammable fluids. Halon 1211 extinguishers have also been successful in extinguishing fires behind the sidewall panels. results from ignition of fuel released during a crash landing. In-flight Post-crash Fire Protection These detectors are similar to photoelectric-area type detectors, but they are typically mounted behind the walls of the protected space. They differ from the area detectors in that fans draw air samples from the protected space into a series of air sampling ports in the monument walls and ceiling, and then through an aluminum tube manifold to the detectors. Fire Control An in-flight fire usually occurs as a result of a system or component failure or maintenance issue. Thermal/acoustic insulation installed behind cabin interior panels with the appropriate fire-resistant properties can delay the onset of fire into the cabin in the event of a crash . The insulation blankets, along with the airplane skin, must be capable of resisting burn-through from a fuel-fed post-crash fire next to the bottom half of the fuselage for a minimum of four minutes to allow passengers to evacuate the airplane before burn-through can occur. In-flight fire Fire Protection Three types of smoke detectors are certified for use in the lavatories and crew rest compartments, as well as in some galley complexes, purser work stations, video control centers, and business centers: ionization-area type, photoelectric-area type, and photoelectric-ducted type. These detectors are designed to detect the presence of smoke particles in the air by reflection of scattered light. They also rely on particles in the air being convectively carried into a sensing chamber where light from a pilot lamp is transmitted through a sensing chamber. If smoke is present, it will reflect light onto a photocell and trigger an alarm. Definition Fire is a flame, whether small or large in a place we don't want it to be, which is generally difficult to control. Fires on combustible metal materials such as titanium, aluminum, magnesium and potassium. wildfire is Type of Firre - Fire Class A: Can occur due to the presence of combustible solids, such as paper, wood plastic or and other solid objects. Characteristic of these fires, leaving a residue such as charcoal or ash. A - Fire Class B: Usually occurs due to the presence of flammable liquid objects such as alcohol, gasoline, oil, grease and the like. B C - Fire Class C: The cause of this fire is caused by electrical problems such as malfunctioning electronic devices or electrical short circuits. Such as chipped & broken wires, short circuit, installation damage and power overload. -Class D fire: Usually occur due to the presence of metals, such as aluminum, lithium and magnesium on fire. All of the above types of fires should be dealt with using fire extinguishers. D Fire Protection Equipment what are fire protective equipment Heat Resistant Shirt This heat-resistant clothing equipment is indispensable for firefighters. This shirt does weigh approximately 4.8 kg. The weight of this heat-resistant suit does not include or count helmets and other equipment. This heat resistant shirt is made or designed to provide protection to body parts. The protection is to prevent body parts from flames while on duty. Fireproof clothes are special clothes for firefighters. Please note that this heat-resistant shirt is equipped with pants. Thick aluminum foil is the material for making fire resistant pants. Fire Resistant Shirt Fire Helmets Fire helmets are different from ordinary helmets worn by motorcyclists. The weight of a firefighter helmet is approximately 1.36 kg. Although it has a different weight from other helmets, this helmet already has extra protection standards. Fire Fighting Gloves Fire Fighting Gloves are the main material for making extinguisher gloves. This fire-fighting nature can also use materials derived from cowhide of the highest quality. This special firefighter glove is different from other gloves. This is because the material used is very strong, quality and certainly fire resistant. safety boots These safety boots have a function to avoid danger, especially the feet. The feet of workers can be maintained when using this type of shoe. The material used to make these fire-fighting shoes is quality material. Because, these shoes have been well designed and have been tested Breathing apparatus Breathing apparatus is also known as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This tool usually has a function as a breathing apparatus. If the officer is in a large fire situation, it does not rule out the possibility of workers experiencing shortness of breath. APAR (Light Fire Extinguisher) or fire extinguisher is a tool used to extinguish fires or control small fires. Light Fire Extinguishers (APAR) are generally in the form of tubes filled with high-pressure fire extinguishing agents. In terms of Occupational Health and Safety (K3), APAR is a mandatory equipment that must be equipped by every company in preventing fires that can threaten the safety of workers and company assets. APAR Fire Triggers Fire is depicted as a triangular shape above. We must first understand the concept of the fire triangle theory. So, the fire triangle is a chemical reaction between oxygen, heat and fuel. When these three elements react, fire will appear and that is what causes fires. The high temperature in a place certainly has a great potential for fire. Usually the hot temperature is caused by: - Sunlight, - Electrical Energy, - Compressed Gas, - Chemical Reaction, - Compressed Gas, and so on. CAUSE OF FIRE

Only one fan operates at a time. The second or standby fan starts automatically on sensing a failure of the operating fan. When smoke is detected the associated Cargo Fire Warning Light illuminates and the EICAS warning FWD/AFT CARGO FIRE displays. Each lavatory has a fire extinguisher located in the waste container cabinet. Fire extinguisher operation is automatic. There is no flight deck indication. Each lavatory has a single smoke detector. If smoke is detected: -an aural alert (chime) sounds in the lavatory and in the cabin -the lavatory call light flashes -the master call light at the associated flight attendant station illuminates Note: The Lavatory Smoke Detector may not be triggered by cigarette smoke. The Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is a self-contained gas turbine located in the airplane tail cone. Detection provides visual and audio indications of overheat and fire conditions in the engines, and fire conditions in the auxiliary power unit, main wheel well areas and 737-800 cargo compartments. CARGO COMPARTMENT SMOKE DETECTION fire detection sensors APU FIRE DETECTION It consists of: WHEEL WELL FIRE DETECTION Fire protection system Sources There are dual fire detector loops in the APU compartment. There is no APU overheat detection. In normal operation, both loops must sense the fire to activate the fire warning. The APU fire loops are continuously for faults. When a fault is detected in one of the loops, the systems reconfigures itself for single loop operation. When the good loop senses a fire condition, the fire warning activates. If both loops indicate a fault, a fire warning is activated. Afterwards, it gets extinguished. ENGINE OVERHEAT AND FIRE DETECTION Each engine contains two overheat/fire detection loops (gas filled). Each of these loops consists of four detector elements. As the temperature of an element increases, the pressure within increases. At a predetermined temperature, the element signals an overheat condition. At a higher temperature, the element signals a fire condition. Egils Sturis, RMCAE The main gear wheel well has fire detection and warning only. There is no fire extinguishing system. The nose gear wheel well does not have a fire detection system. The main gear wheel fire detection system consists of a single fire detector loop routed through both main gear wells.
