Preventing Cancer and Other Illnesses What to Do When You Catch a Cold Attacks the membranes around the brain and spinal cord Can result in hearing loss, kidney failure, and permanent brain damage. About 2,400 to 3,000 cases occur every year and 10% are fatal. Can be spread through coughing, kissing, sharing drinks, utensils or cigarettes. How are they Spread Kristen Gawenus Michelle Malcolm Heidi Wu Karr Mullen Common Cold 2% of Americans have Hepatitis C Most people do not realize they have it Transmitted through needles and blood. Develop progressive, irreversible liver damage. Signs of Inherited Cancers Stay smoke-free Eat Smart Healthy weight Limit exposure to environmental risks Type 1- Insulin-dependent diabetes Type 2- non-insulin-dependent diabetes Who Does it Affect? Treatments are as follows: Ibuprofen for aches, antihistamines, and nasal sprays. Breast Cancer Prevention Most common in the first year of life Rises in young people from the ages 15 and 24 Freshman living in dorms are three times more likely to get it. 1.37 million individuals are diagnosed with cancer each year. Relative risk compares the risk of developing cancer in people with a certain exposure or trait to the risk in those who do not. Types of Diabetes Cold viruses spread by coughs sneezes touch What Could Happen? Less serious Transmitted through poor sanitation Children and staff at day cares, people who work with primates and sanitation workers are more likely to get hepatitis a. If one does not take care of their diabetes they could go blind, have kidney failure, cardiovascular disease and premature death. Eat healthy Keep weight down Exercise regularly. Obesity Diabetes Obesity causes 90,000 cancer deaths a year. The higher ones BMI their risk of death increases. Breast, colon, gallbladder and kidney cancer are only a few cancers that are related to obesity. Who is at Risk? Influenza 500,000 Americans contract hepatitis each year It causes inflammation of the liver Symptoms include: headaches, fever, fatigue, stiff or aching joints, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. There are approximately 200 cold viruses. Americans alone come down with 1 billion colds a year. Colds can occur in any season, however you can become immune to a few colds one season and then catch a cold another season. Rhinoviruses are common in the spring, summer and early fall. They include stuffy noses, headaches, and runny eyes. Adenoviruses strike in the winter and deal mainly with breathing passages and fevers. More severe than a cold 10-20% develop the Flu each year 36000 die from the Flu Transmitted the same way as a cold Can prevent getting the flu by receiving a flu shot or FLuMist which is a nose spray. Types of Cancer Carcinoma- most common, in the layers of cells that cover the body's surface. Sarcoma- forms in the connective tissues: bones, muscles, blood vessels. Leukemia- begins in the blood and then goes to your bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen. Lymphoma- harms your lymph system which filters out impurities. Every 3 minutes a woman in the US finds out she has breast cancer. Age: At 25 her chance of developing breast cancer is 1 in 19,608. By 45 it increases to 1 in 93 and by 65, it is 1 in 17. By 90-95, 1 in 8 women will have developed breast cancer. Family history Having a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer increases their chance of getting it as well. Women who had their first period before 12 are at a greater risk than those who did not. That is because of the amount of estrogen which is known to cause cancer if their is too much. Detection: Perform monthly breast self-exams after period. One must report any changes right away and to see a trained practitioner every 3 years and a yearly mammogram for all women starting at 40. Treatment: Lumpectomy which removes only the cancerous tissue and a Mastectomy which includes the entire breast and some underarm lymph node. It is a disease in which the body doesn't produce or respond properly to insulin. About 100 million people worldwide have diabetes and 16 million are in the US. Melanoma Potentially fatal, transmitted through blood and other bodily fluids. Infects around 350,000 people world wide each year. Can lead to chronic liver infection, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Cancer Hepatitis Combination of interferon that stops the virus from duplicating and also ribavirin which is an antiviral medication. Deadliest type of skin cancer. The amount and intensity of sun exposure determine the risk of getting it. People who are more likely to get melanoma are people with fair skin, freckles, history of childhood sunburn, family history and a large number of moles. Transcript: Soccer: Kicking a soccer ball Tactical Concepts: This play can be used to confuse the goalie or to use for a corner kick in soccer Crossing in Front of the goal- Two strikers are attacking the goal, and their paths cross whilst doing so. Our players are always behind the ball when the final pass comes in. This is to confuse the goalie to score. 1.Two players from the line on the end line check in to the player with the ball. 2. The two checking players should be about 5-7 yards apart from each other when checking. 3. The top player plays the ball in towards the front checking player and sprints around the stick on the sidelines closest to him. 4. The first checking player dummies the run by stepping over the ball and letting it run between their legs. 5. The front player then sprints around the back stick and makes a run to the back post. 6. The back checking player plays a 1st time ball into the space of the outside stick for the top player to cross on one touch and sprints around the closest stick and makes the front post run. Detailed preactice plan Basketball 1. Run towards the ball or stand behind it 2. Plant your non-kicking foot at the side of the ball 3.Swing kicking leg back and bend knee 4.Bring foot towards the ball (use the inside of your foot) 5. have contact with ball 6. Follow through kick Comparing Soccer to another sport: Passing Drills: stamina, speed, leg muscle strength, good attitude, determination, footwork, ball handling, hand eye (hand-foot) coordination, multitasking, team work Kicking a ball Strategy: 1.Three players per drill group are utilized. The distance form A to B is about 10 yards and the distance between B to C is about 10 yards. 2. Player A dribbles a few times and sends a lead pass to B. 3. B dribbles a few times and sends a square pass to C 4. C then passes to A and this cycles is repeated down the field

Transcript: How Nikes Work Nike Shox Nike Shox are the most commonly sold nikes. They are mostly used for casual walking shoes and can also be used for running. There are usually four "shox" that take in the impact of every step. Every time a step is taken the impact is not going to your heel like normal shoes the impact goes to the middle of your foot. Also while running the force that the shox take in bounces off the shoe and then you get more power with each step. This will help you run a lot faster, and go farther with each step. Nike Air Nike air have been in style since the 1990's. The shoes have air in the heel to make every step feel cushioned. Some of the nike airs aren't for cushioning though... Some of them are for sports just like most nike shoes. All the different types of nike air have all different types of air. Some have pressured air for higher jump. These are one of the longest lasting nikes. AIR BUBBLE NIKE FLYWIRE Nike flywire was invented by Jay Meschter a nike shoe designer. He took a shoe which was in the shape of a foot and he wanted to make it very lightweight. He used long stitching that would allow the shoe to not have a lot of weight on it... The shoe contains nothing extra it only contains what is absoululey needed in order for the shoe to stay together. Some of these shoes are one of the most lightweight shoes in the world. One of them only weighed 93 grams!!!! I hope you learne a lot about nikes and what the most important ones are used for. Make a good decision on the next time you buy sneakers for any sport. These kinds of shoes are mostly used for short distance running since they are so light in weight. They can also be used for long distance running too. Thank you for your attention! Conclusion

Transcript: Healthy Active Living Experience Section 3: My Personal Journey Pt 1 Gym ISU done by Phoebe Elliott Section 3 On the first day, what I would tell myself if I could go back is that I should not be so negative about myself in a sport, as it will later surprise me. My biggest success in this class is finding a sport im fairly good at. Football and Ultimate Frisbee were my best sports, I will add badminton too. The biggest challenges that I faced in the gym were being confident during sports and not being scared. Section 1: Introduction + more From the first day in this class, till June, I have drastically improved. In this section, I will discuss my journey in this class. Section 3: My Personal Journey Pt 2 Hello! I am Phoebe Elliott. I am currently a grade 10 student at FJB. I am currently 16 years old. With this presentation, I will discuss my journey in this gym class! Section 1: Introduction + more My perspective has changed from February about living a healthy active lifestyle is that yes, the gym is not just about sports. In the gym, you learn different things. This ranges from CPR, all the way to SMART goals and Nutrition. There is a common perspective that gym is just sports, but it is not. How this class will help me in the future so that shortly, I can be CPR certified and for lifelong, and if something happens at a store, home, or anywhere, I will know what to do and save a life. The benefits of being physically active are : Being physically active can improve your mood. Help prevent heart attacks, diabetes, etc. Helps you maintain a healthy body weight Improvement in your mental health. Stronger bones, muscles, and joints. Gives you something to do in the day. And more! Section 4: Goal 1 and SMART Section 2: Nutrition Section 2: Learning about eating nutritiously is an important factor in mine or any journey to a healthy lifestyle that can show me, or anyone, that no food group is bad for you, it's how you balance them. It's also how we shouldn't label food as "good" or "bad". Stuff may be less healthy than others, but it's about how much you consume. One other thing I will add is how a balanced meal and certain foods that you eat, can give advantages and help prevent certain diseases, etc. My first goal is going to be about sleep. My goal for sleep is to have a better sleeping schedule. Currently, my sleep schedule is all over the place. I go to bed pretty late at night and on a school night, I get less than the recommended hours of sleep I should get. My goal is to start going to bed at an earlier time. An example can be 10:30 pm - 11:00 pm. Specific - I will sleep at a better time range, I will start as soon as I can, and I am doing it because I want to be in a better mood, less tired, and be able to do more stuff. Measurable - My goal is to feel 90% better than I usually get with the goal of a better sleep schedule. Achievable - How this will be achieved is that I will set a reminder that reminds me to head to sleep. Relevant - This goal will be helpful/relevant with my other goals as It will put me in a better mood to do stuff. Time-bound - I want this goal to last for the rest of my life, but I want it to stay during the school year. Nutrition Section 4: 2 Goals and SMART Section 2: Goal 2 and SMART My second goal will be to get outside more often by practicing ultimate frisbee, and overall just exercising to get better, and spend more time outside. I don't spend too much time outside, so doing this stuff can help me spend more time. Specific - I will get outside more often, I will start once the school year is complete, and I want to do this to get better, and to spend more time outside. Measurable - My goal is to spend 50% more time outside than I usually do. Achievable - How I can achieve this is by is asking my family if they wanna practice frisbee with me, which gives not only me time outside, but my family too. Relevant - I will say this can be relevant as it will make me want to go outside more often, and can get me in better shape. Time-bound - I want this goal to last all summer long, till the end of summer break. Section 2: Nutrition The Conclusion Links: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/physical-activity-its-important The changes in my daily life that I can make based on what I learned is that I can incorporate more food groups that I may not eat as often. This includes more fruits/veggies. I could also lessen the amount of other food groups that I eat. This includes grains and protein. https://www.quora.com/How-important-is-learning-about-nutrition-for-your-everyday-life#:~:text=A%20well%2Dbalanced%20diet%20rich%20in%20fruits%2C%20vegetables%2C%20whole,and%20improve%20overall%20well%2Dbeing.
