Power Plant Powerpoint

Transcript: Hydroelectric Power How it works to generate electricity A hydraulic turbine converts the energy of flowing water into mechanical energy. A hydroelectric generator converts this mechanical energy into electricity. The operation of a generator is based on the principles discovered by Faraday. He found that when a magnet is moved past a conductor, it causes electricity to flow. In a large generator, electromagnets are made by circulating direct current through loops of wire wound around stacks of magnetic steel laminations. These are called field poles, and are mounted on the perimeter of the rotor. The rotor is attached to the turbine shaft, and rotates at a fixed speed. When the rotor turns, it causes the field poles (the electromagnets) to move past the conductors mounted in the stator. This, in turn, causes electricity to flow and a voltage to develop at the generator output terminal. The resource we need for our power plant is a large body of water. The form of energy we are promoting is Hydroelectric power. A hydraulic turbine converts the energy of flowing water into mechanical energy. A hydroelectric generator converts this mechanical energy into electricity. Weaknesses The flooding of water destroys the natural environment. If you are trying to make one, you need to have fast flowing water. Hydroelectric power plants are bad for the fish because they make their lives harder. There is a high cost for construction. Hydroelectic power plants are too big and very noticeable. Strengths Electricity can be produced at a constant rate once a dam is built. Hydroelectric power plants are designed to last many decades and can contribute to the generation of electricity for many years. The lake that forms behind the dam can be used for water sports or even tourist attractions. The lake’s water can be used for irrigation processes. Hydroelectric power plants do not produce green house gases and don’t pollute the air. by Dani, Amanda, and Grace The lake that forms behind the dam can be used for water sports or even tourist attractions.

Energy & Power PowerPoint

Transcript: Energy & Power By: Iyanna Boston March 29, 2021 What is Energy & Power? What is Energy & Power Energy is the ability to do work or cause a change. Work is the transfer of energy and the SI unit that we use to show that energy is being used is Joule. Power is the time rate of doing work or the amount of work done. The SI units for power is Watts. Two main types of Energy Kinetic & Potential Energy The Two main types of energy are Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy. Kinetic Energy is described as moving energy, while Potential Energy is energy stored or not moving. Example Example How to Calculate Kinetic Energy Calculating Kinetic Energy The amount of Kinetic Energy an object has depends on its mass and velocity. The Formula for Kinetic Energy is K=1/2 mv^2. Where K is the amount of Kinetic Energy of the object, M is the mass of the object, and V is the velocity of the object. Workout Problem A roller coaster with a mass of 3000 kg is rolling down a track with a speed of 15 m/s. What is the roller coaster's Kinetic Energy? Example 1 Formula for Kinetic Energy K= 1/2 mv^2 K = 1/2 (3000) ( 15) ^2 K = 337,500 Joules Workout Problem A 5 kg ball is rolling at a velocity of 2 m/s. What is the ball's Kinetic Energy? Example 2 Kinetic Energy Formula K = 1/2 mv ^2 K = 1/2 (5) (2)^2 K = 10 Joules Potential Energy Potential Energy Potential Energy is energy stored for use at a later time. There are two types of Potential Energy, Elastic Potential Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Elastic Potential Energy Elastic Potential energy is energy stored in bows and arrows, springs, elastic and rubber bands. So really, anything that can stretch and bounce back. Gravitational Potential Energy GPE is height and weight dependent ( NO MASS!!!). The formula for GPE is Weight X Height or mass X 9.8 m/s^2 X Height. Gravitational Potential Energy Workout Problem A diver is at the top of a 15 m high diving platform that has a mass of 25 kg. What is the diver's potential energy? Example P.E = 25 X 9.8 m/s ^2 X 15 P.E = 3,675 kg m/s = 3,675 J Other forms of Energy Other Forms of Energy & Power There are six other forms of energy. They are Mechanical Energy, Thermal Energy, Chemical Energy, Electrical Energy, Electromagnetic Energy, and Nuclear Energy. Power Workout problem Power is the rate at which something is done. The formula for Power is (Force X Distance / Time). As previously stated the SI unit for power is Watts. Power How much power is being used if a force of 45 Newtons is used to push a box a distance of of 5 meters in 10 seconds? P = F X D / T P = 45 X 5/10 P = 22.5 Watts The End This is THE END of my PowerPoint Presentation, THANK YOU!
