Transcript: In the 1830's Miami was the fourth largest college in the United States after Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth. Miami is known as the "Mother of Fraternities", with the Miami Triad Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Theta, and Sigma Chi being founded in Oxford. The total cost of attending Miami during its first year was $93, including board, room, tuition, laundry, candles, and wood. The oldest building on the Miami campus is the DeWitt log cabin which was built in 1804. Oxford, Ohio is the first Oxford in North America. Miami is one of the very few universities in the country with its own cemetery. The Miami University official seal was adopted in 1826. The first intercollegiate football game in the state of Ohio was played in 1888 between Miami and Cincinnati. Miami University was established in 1809 named after the Miami Indian Tribe that inhabited the area now known the Miami Valley Region of Ohio. In the 1850's there were five colleges in Oxford. Miami is a residential university with a focus on teaching undergraduates. Miami is nicknamed the "Cradle of Coaches" for the star-quality coaches that have trained through its football program. Miami University's basketball team has appeared in 16 NCAA basketball championships and has reached the Sweet Sixteen four times. The Ohio Legislature passed "An Act to Establish the Miami University" on February 2, 1809. The township the university was built in was originally called "College Township", and was renamed Oxford, Ohio in 1810. In 1839 Old Miami reached its enrollment peak, with 250 students from 13 states. The "Beta Bells" of Miami University were built in 1939. By 1907, the enrollment at the University passed 700 students and women made up about a third. For the undergraduate class of 2012, Miami received 15,009 applications and accepted 80% of them. Newsweek rated Miami No. 19, in its 2012 list of Most Beautiful Schools.
